FAST FACTS:

  • Pit Bulls maul Boston Terrier Puppy
  • Puppy had to be euthanized
  • Owner believes his death may have saved a child's life

(Southaven, MS 11/17/2009) Monday Steve Hessler was taking pictures of Moses, "He was just a sweetheart."

Tuesday he spent the afternoon burying his Boston Terrier in the backyard of his Southaven home after a neighbors two pit bulls mauled the puppy.

"He was a little six-month-old puppy. He never had a chance to live. All he wanted to do was play."

Hessler believes Moses was nosing around near a gap in a wooden fence that separates his home from his neighbors.

One of the planks was loose providing a space for his dog to slide thru.

"He apparently stuck his little nose up under the fence where they'd been digging. And apparently they snatched him through and just chewed him up real bad."

So badly that Moses had to be euthanized on the spot.

Hessler thinks losing his puppy probably saved a child's life. Now instead of prowling in the backyard, the pit bulls are now at the animal shelter.

"If those dogs got out on the street, if that fence came open or if they dug out, some little girl or boy wouldn't have a chance."

Another neighbor, James Powers put up a second metal fence to protect his family from the pit bulls.

"We've got two dogs too and were scared they'd get over here and also I've got grandchildren that live with me," explained James Powers.

When we went to the home where the pit bulls were housed a woman named Renalle Braden answered the door. She told us she apologized to the Hesslers, calling the incident unfortunate.

"Dogs are going to dig and her dog came into our backyard. So I really don't know what to say."

The Pit Bulls have been deemed vicious and will likely be euthanized.

The attack is still under investigation. Authorities say at this time the owners have not been given a citation because the terrier got into Braden's backyard.
