(Oxford, MS 9/1/2010) For a few months now, a committee appointed by the Mayor of Oxford, Mississippi has been studying the idea of Sunday alcohol sales, which are currently banned.
This week you'll get your chance to share an opinion to that committee.
Oxford doesn't allow alcohol sales on Sunday, but in recent years there's been more discussion about relaxing that law.
Peyton Self heads up a group appointed by Oxford's Mayor to look into it. "We're studying the issue and trying to find a way to have what you call a 'limited opening."
That means, limited hours, and limited to places that also sell a significant share of food.
When the committee finishes its research, it'll present its findings to the Oxford Board of Aldermen, for consideration.
Thursday, September 2nd, a public hearing, will give Oxford residents a chance to have a say in whether or how the law gets changed.
Those wanting to comment at the public hearing at the Oxford Conference Center, will get two minutes apiece.
Self says the next step will be to put all the information together for a proposal to Oxford Aldermen. "There's no real time table. I think we're getting a pretty good idea of what we're gonna do right now." "You think you'll know something by the end of the year?" "I think by October we'll have something."
The meeting takes place at 5:30 at the Oxford Conference Center, that's just north of town of Highway 7.
