FAST FACTS:
  • Melodia Dunn turned herself into authorities Tuesday
  • Grand jury indicted her on Agg. Child Neglect and Reckless Homicide
  • Could face maximum of 58 years behind bars

(Memphis 11/10/2009) The Memphis mother who left her two toddlers home alone to shop and run errands has been indicted by a Shelby County Grand Jury.

22-year-old Melodia Dunn turned herself into authorities at Jail East Tuesday about 7:00 p.m. We're told she knew investigators were looking for her, so she surrendered.

She faces two courts of Aggravated Child Neglect or Endangerment and two counts of Reckless Homicide. According to a release issued by the district attorney's office, the first two counts state Dunn "did unlawfully and knowingly, other than by accidental means neglect or endanger" Ladereon Dunn and Catareon Dunn.

The third and fourth counts state Dunn "did unlawfully and recklessly kill" her two children.

3-year-old Ladereon died October 19, the day the fire broke out at their duplex on Effie Road. 2-year-old Catareon died October 26.

If convicted Dunn could be sentenced to a maximum of 58 years behind bars. Because of the ages of the children, much of that sentence would be non-parolable.

Dunn is being held at Jail East on a $250,000 bond. An arraignment date hasn't been set.
