FAST FACTS:
(Memphis 11/19/2009) A routine trip to the grocery store ended in terror for a Memphis mother.
Kristin Goode was robbed at gunpoint as she was trying to strap her toddler into his carseat. It happened in the parking lot at Montesi's at the 3300 block of Summer Avenue.
The 22-year-old and her family moved to Memphis in January. And so far, they've had some pretty bad luck. This is actually the second time the mother and son have been robbed since August.
Goode says the surveillance video is hard to watch.
"I was just putting him in the car after we went shopping," said Goode. "Some guy came up behind us and told me he wanted my purse."
"He put what felt like a gun in my back," said Goode.
She remained calm for the sake of her little boy who turned one on Monday.
"That's why I didn't fight with him or anything, because I didn't want him to get hurt," said Goode.
The robber took her purse and cell phone. In the video, you can see Goode frantically run to another car for help, but the driver refused to roll down her window.
A store security guard called police.
"It's ridiculous, out of control," said Goode's husband, Jessie.
He says the last time they were robbed, teenagers ambushed them just blocks from their home as they pushed their baby boy in his stroller.
"They shoved a gun in my face, I didn't comply. The other one hit me in the back of the head with a pistol," he said.
"You shouldn't be scared to walk down the street near your house," said Kristin Goode.
She urges other mothers to be extra vigilant about their surroundings. She believes crooks see moms as easy targets.
"I just think that's why they do it. You're gonna want to protect your kids so they think you'll be an easy target," she said.
Crime prevention experts can't stress enough, if you're leaving a store, pay attention. Don't get caught up on your cell phone or get so focused on putting groceries in your car that you ignore your surroundings. Take time to periodically look around.
