FAST FACTS:
(Memphis 12/7/2009) Memphis Mayor A C Wharton is telling city employees be honest in what you do, otherwise they'll be looking for work.
The Mayor signed an ethics law that deals with accepting gifts and conflicts of interest. Now, he says, the job will be to enforce it. There will be no money and no gifts from people doing business in the city.
This is one of the Wharton campaign promises, sign into effect ethics legislation for city employees and for the mayor's staff. It hasn't got a thing to do with elected officials, they have their own policies. The mayor says he realizes that to get anything done, people need to trust government. That's why he hopes this executive order will be considered more than just a piece of paper.
Wharton admits two of his closest aides have been on his personal payroll, after they were let go, or quit over ethics questions in County Government.
Mayor Wharton says employees getting paid by taxpayers need to be held to the highest level of decency.
