(Millington 03/20/2010) For nearly a week, the folks gathered inside the Millington Civic Center Chapel held onto hope that 49-year old Stephen Grayer would be found. He was last seen launching his boat near Drummonds, Tennessee in Tipton County. For days rescue teams searched for Grayer. They found his capsized boat but not him.

"I had a lot of respect for Steve. Respect for his work ethic. Respect for his character. He was an honest man," said Grayer's co-worker Charles Cole.

Saturday, family and friends held an emotional memorial service for Grayer. Those who knew him best celebrated his life.

"He was very close to his father. They had a lot of things in common. Both of them liked remote control airplanes, liked to fish, liked to hunt and liked the water," said Grayer's mother Lillie.

"I will always aspire to his qualities and I know I will never reach any of them if I could," said Grayer's friend Mike Walsh.

Grayer spent 10-years in the Navy. Friends say he was an avid outdoorsman who loved his family especially his wife and three daughters.

"So now dad I say to you. You are a good dad and you did a great job raising us and we will be just fine, " said Brandy Jimenez-Dent.

Though their hope is now replaced with sorrow family and friends say through Grayer's life and death they've learned an important lesson

"Think about Steve. Our lives are so short as they are even if we live them to their fullness," said Walsh.

The Grayer family says they would like to thank everyone who was involved in the search efforts.
