( Memphis 9/1/2010) Mark Luttrell is moving from fighting crime to leading government.
As he took the oath of office Wednesday morning, he laid out what's ahead.
"This administration will make government more efficient and effective by targeting wasteful spending, needless red tape and loss productivity," says Luttrell.
He says don't expect things as usual.
"The first thing they are gonna see is a quick response to their questions and issues. We have discovered this is not a real responsive government in trying to get back with people who have concerns," says Luttrell.
And while he is handling the people's concerns, Mayor Luttrell says he will also tackle the big issues, like jobs.
"Let's look for those areas where we are inhibiting and impeding progress in developing jobs. Let's try to give our entrepreneurs a free hand in trying to get out there and help us solve some of these economic problems."
And in the area of education and crime, the Mayor says the two are intertwined.
"If you can raise people out of poverty, get people working, statistically that reduces crime. If you can educate people, raise the graduation rate, that reduces crime and builds your community economically," says Luttrell.
Mayor Luttrell says working with other Mayors will be key since they all share the same goal.
"Yes we do have our problems but we live in a wonderful place that has the potential to become even better," he says.
Mayor Luttrell promises an open government that will make people proud.
