Eyesore Apartments Get New Owner And Demolition Plan
FAST FACTS:
  • Neighborhood group buys eyesore apartments
  • Marina Cove vacant more than 5 years
  • Demolition in the works
(Memphis 07/25/2010) - Plans are underway to demolish an eyesore that has plagued Hickory Hill for years. The apartments near Winchester and Mendenhall have been a haven for trouble. A deal is now signed that will finally bring some relief to folks living and working near the property.

The Marina Cove apartments are more than an eyesore. Some say they are a threat to health and safety but now the property has a new owner, The Power Center Development Corporation. After 5 years of being vacant, the apartments now have a date with some demolition equipment. The development corporation is tearing down all 394 units.

"That's a real good thing because it's not good for us, for those apartments looking the way they are. Everybody up here is glad they are fixing to come down, too," said Verne Jackson, Hickory Hill.

The district attorney declared the apartments a public nuisance and finally shut them down. However, forcing the complex shut only made matters worse. There were other hazards that followed.

"That apartment complex has been on fire numerous of times. So, I think it would be great for the neighborhood and it will be safe for the whole entire environment," said Marsharee Shaw, Hickory Hill.

Jackson who works at a nearby business also noticed problems after the apartments were closed.

"You can see the water standing back there. Mosquitoes, roaches, pests. Sometimes people be hanging out in the back," said Jackson.

The Power Center Community Development Corporation is a neighborhood development group that focuses on economic, educational and social development in Hickory Hill. They reportedly plan to tear down Marina Cove and redevelop the 24 acres of land.

"I've been in the Hickory Hill area for more than 10 years and to see how the neighborhood has changed, not in a good way, it really hurts. Now, to see it being rebuilt I think it will be great," says Shaw.

The Power Center Development Corporation is backed by New Direction Christian Church in Hickory Hill. The corporation also operates a charter school in the neighborhood.
