MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WREG-TV) - One of the participants in this year's St. Jude Marathon has died, after collapsing at the finish line.
St. Jude officials say a female runner completed the half-marathon, but collapsed at the finish line. She was immediately treated by medical personnel on the scene, then taken to Methodist University Hospital, where she passed away.
This is the first death in the 8 year history of the marathon, and the first in 30 years of marathons in the city of Memphis.
"We extend our deepest sympathy to her family and our hearts go out to them. We are deeply saddened that this occurred during what was otherwise an inspiring and successful event," said Rick Shadyac, ALSAC Chief Executive Officer.
