  • 500 teachers, 12 countries
  • Teachers learn to integrate new technology in classroom

(Germantown, TN 7/20/10) 500 teachers from 12 countries have converged on Memphis for a lesson in teaching with technology.

The students are gone for summer, but the classrooms are packed with teachers.

The teachers are here for the "Laptop Institute" at Lausanne Collegiate School, which is in its eighth year. Since Sunday, the educators have cracked open their laptops to learn the latest in teaching today's students.

"Sessions about new software that's coming out, new hardware that's available. There's a lot of different opportunities for teachers, administrators," said Stewart Crais with Lausanne. "A lot of the sessions are very practical, hands-on. They're done by teachers who are in the classroom and understand what it's like to be in front of 20 kids with a laptop."

They've learned how to integrate computers in the classroom.

Also, 120 teachers will walk away with video cameras thanks to the latest program, Watchknow.org. The educational website, created by the founder of Wikipedia, compiles teaching videos into one site.

The goal is to get more teachers to videotape their own classrooms and upload to the website.

So far, WatchKnow has about 20,000 videos online and they're hoping more teachers jump on board.

"Each teacher will have their own channel with their own videos from WatchKnow.org appropriate for that class and then from field-trips or classrooms that they've edited," said Walt Henley of WatchKnow. "This is phenomenal what this is going to do."
