FAST FACTS:
Raleigh Egypt student run over by fellow schoolmate; Suspect charged with attempted 2nd Degree Murder; Parents on both sides point finger at Memphis City School;
(Memphis 03/14/2010) One student is run over by a car and another is booked on attempted 2nd degree murder charges for the crime. The incident happened earlier this week outside a Memphis public library after a fight at Raleigh Egypt High. Parents of both children are pointing fingers at Memphis City Schools and a growing gang problem inside the schools.
"I went to the bus stop and soon as I turned the corner, I see a Ford Taurus at full speed," said Angela Boyd, victim's mother.
Angela Boyd says she replays that scene over and over in her mind.
She said, "He had just enough time to move one leg. When he moved that leg, the car caught the other leg. Bam! He flipped and fell."
She says she drove up just in time to see her son, Tavon, run over by a car outside the public library in Raleigh. It's where he goes after he gets out of Raleigh Egypt High School when the bus drops him off.
"He's got a broken bone in his nose. His neck, he's got gashes right here, right here," she says as she points to his bruised chest, wrist and leg.
Boyd says she called the school several times the day her son was run over to ask he be notified not to ride the bus. She was going to pick him up. She says the message was never delivered.
She told News Channel 3 fights had happened during school and she believed they would escalate when students got out of school. It turns out she was right.
A frustrated Boyd said, "If I call you one time, it's enough but 3 times. And, I'm telling you it's a matter of life and death."
Police say Raleigh Egypt senior Jermayne Myers was behind the wheel of the car that hit Boyd. The police report says after they got out of school a fight broke out at the K-Mart parking lot. When the fight was over, Boyd's son went across the street to the library. Officers say the other student, Myers, got in his car, swerved into Boyd and drove off.
"The point is ya'll job is to protect our kids. Make sure our kids get home safe. Your job is not to do nothing but answer a phone. Give a message," said Boyd.
Myers is charged with attempted 2nd degree murder. Lawyer, Javier Bailey, says Myers is a graduating senior with no history of problems and was defending himself. He says he was trying to get away.
"He's surrounded by Crips and they're beating on his car and he just simply tried to get out of harms way," explained Boyd.
Bailey is also pointing fingers at Memphis City Schools. He says Raleigh Egypt has a huge gang problem and the fight stems from gangs. Bailey's children once attended the school before he moved them.
"This was a gang problem. It's been a problem at Raleigh Egypt for a long time," said Bailey.
Both sides agree the video from surveillance cameras at the library will tell the true story of what happened. They also agree things never should have escalated to this magnitude.
Jermayne Myers will be in court Monday morning. He's out on bond. His lawyer says he will enter a not guilty plea.
