FAST FACTS:
(Memphis 02/06/2010) Former Mayor Willie Herenton is "back in stride again" shaking hands and greeting supporters as he kicked off his 9th District Congressional campaign.
"We will win this election," said Herenton.
Herenton spoke for more than 20 minutes to hundreds of folks holding red, white and blue Herenton for congress signs. He highlighted his years of service as mayor saying Memphis is better because of him. Now, he says he's ready to go to the nation's capital.
"I want to go to Washington with some common sense, pragmatic approaches, to help those congressional people understand the plight of the common man," he said.
Herenton didn't talk much about issues instead he focused on what he calls a lack of black representation in the Tennessee delegation.
"White folks yall got all eleven we just want one," he said.
But that message isn't sitting well with some voters.
"We're in a new day, its not about race. I think most people have moved beyond that, I hope so," said voter Jim Fuller.
The 9th district's Democratic Congressional Primary is already being called the "Clash of the Titans." Incumbent steve cohen currently holds the seat in a race that is expected to heat up as it gets closer to the August election.
"You know both candidates bring a lot to the table and I'm just going to be very interested to see who has the best platform," said 9th District Voter Chester Charles.
"I'm happy with Cohen so I'm happy with what he's done, where he's taken us, what he's done in Washington," said voter Lori Carter.
The primary is August 5th.
