  • Doctors headed to Haiti to help; Collecting medical supplies

(Memphis 01/13/2010) Dr. Gordon Kraus and other Memphis volunteers with Haiti Medical Missions have done a lot of work in the area affected by the earthquake.

They funded and continue to support a medical clinic that is located less than 15 minutes away from the epicenter.

Dr. Kraus hasn't strayed far from his computer all day. He's browsing through pictures and checking his email hoping for any contact from the Haitian medical clinic he and fellow Mid-Southerners helped build, "I have talked to relatives and friends of some of those on our compound and from 3 different individuals I'm told there were no serious injuries on our compound. I don't know the true status of the clinic."

Kraus says the clinic was already essential to health care in the area. He showed us pictures of the dozens of people that wait outside each day before it opens. There are so many some have to be treated in the streets. The sickest are allowed to sit in the waiting room where they see a number of nurses and doctors from around the world who staff the Mid-South funded clinic. The initial word is all of the clinics employees are okay and buildings on the compound are still standing. Good news for Memphis doctors who think of the people of Haiti like family.

"Apparently the main hospital was hurt. So, any small clinics any supplies that are in place, doctors, nurses are going to be a tremendous help," said Dr. Marion Bailey, Haiti Medical Missions of Memphis.

The group was planning a trip to Haiti within the next couple of weeks but they've now moved up the date.

"Knowing the neighborhood and structures that are concrete walls and concrete structures and seeing some pictures, I'm sure there is tremendous devastation. It's going to be a lot of wound care, a lot of pain and a lot need for a lot of common things you could go to Walgreens and get here," said Kraus.

Haiti Medical Missions is collecting donations at Holy Spirit Catholic Church during normal business hours. Items like bandages, surgical wraps, pain medication are all greatly appreciated. The church is located at 2300 Hickory Crest Drive in East Memphis.
