(Memphis 1/21/2010) It was a solemn homecoming for a young man who is said to have always wanted to serve his country.
The Army's Honor Guard was on hand as Sgt. Daniel Merriweather's flag draped coffin was taken off the plane at the National Guard Armory Thursday morning.
Friends and family gathered to greet it.
Daniel Merriweather's parents, wife, and two young boys looked on.
His youngest son is just three months old, born last October.
Sgt. Merriweather's sister told us last week, her brother sensed this tour could be his last because it was so dangerous.
But they say he was doing what he loved, serving his country.
Members of the Patriot Guard Riders escorted Sgt. Merriweather's body as a way to say thank you for the sacrifice.
"Most folks in this country have forgotten the freedom they got, how they got it and how it was earned. People that are here, stand here and hold the flag they haven't forgotten and we'll never forget." says Chuck Moss with Patriot Guard Riders.
Daniel Merriweather's body was taken to the Ford Funeral Home in preparation for Friday's funeral.
The funeral will be held at noon Friday at Miracle Temple Ministries Church on Millbranch.
It will be followed by his burial at West Tennessee Cemetery on Forest Hill Irene.
