FAST FACTS:
(Memphis, 4/19/2010) Memphis City Schools Superintendent Dr. Kriner Cash says he plans to tighten the district's bullying and harassment rules, especially when it comes to cyber-bullying.
The announcement came on the same night that parents of East High School students pleaded with the school board to do more to protect their children at school.
Denise Edwards says her daughter was attacked at East High School back in January, "If I don't send my child to school, then I get locked up. And I'm not fixing to go to jail for that. They need to make sure my children and other children feel safe when they go to school."
Another mother talked about her daughter's attack at East High School last week after a brawl broke out among a big group of girls.
Dr. Cash says he's worried about the culture at East High and the welfare of students there. He says the school has a damaged reputation.
The school's principal was also recently suspended with pay, pending the results of an internal audit.
Dr. Cash would not go into detail about the suspension, but says he expects the audit to uncover numerous problems.
Cash also says he plans to appoint a new principal at East High School who would lead the school through the remainder of the school year.
"We need to restore a sense of safety and security and focus on achievement," Cash said.
The results of the internal audit could be finished this week.
