(Memphis 7/30/2010) Shelby County Democratic Party officials say they are concerned about the number of Republicans heading to the polls in early voting.

"It's something that we're going to have to study," says Party Chairman Van Turner.

In Northern Shelby County, the Eighth Congressional District Republican primary is a hotly contested race. The early voting places have been described as busy in that area.

The race for the GOP nomination for Governor in Tennessee is also bringing out a lot of people. "There's one other explanation, "says Shelby County Republican Party Chairman Lang Wiseman. "I think we've got a pretty good list of candidates."

Shelby County has more Democrat registered voters than Republican.

But Norm Brewer of News Channel 3 says the big race that was supposed to drive people to the polls sort of fizzled. "The battle between Steve Cohen and Willie Herenton in the Ninth Congressional District was expected to motivate a lot of people to vote," Brewer said. "The effects are that a lot of Democrats further down the ballot could be in trouble."

Election Day is August 5th, and Wiseman hopes that voters continue to be energetic. "We've just got to keep it up."

For Democrat Van Turner, it's a numbers game. "In essence," he says, "you have a finite number of Republicans in the county. Whether they all vote in early voting or come out election day, that's it."
