FAST FACTS:
(Memphis 4/12/2010) A Memphis grandmother is in serious trouble after police say she got drunk and crashed her car with her three grandchildren in the backseat.
Sharon Kimbrough faces nine separate charges after the accident, but relatives are defending her. They say what happened was an isolated incident and that she learned her lesson.
"She had been drinking, but she just still had the bottle in there," says her son Brell Kimbrough. "She wasn't drinking while she was driving. I know that for a fact."
Last Friday, her car crashed at the corner of Raines and Millbranch.
When police got to the scene, they smelled a "strong odor" on her breath, saw she had "soiled her clothing with urine" and noticed she was "swaying while standing."
Police say she was combative after the crash.
Inside her car, they found an "empty cup which {smelled} like alcohol" and "an open bottle of Canadian Mist Whiskey, 200ml, which was half empty."
Also in the backseat, police found her three grandchildren ages three, two and one. Each child was unbuckled.
"She's a good grandmother," says Brell who says she was taking the kids for a play date with her other grandkids, but made a bad choice.
"She ain't trying to put them kids in harms way. She just messed up. Everybody makes mistakes here and there," says Brell. "Family was here from out of town. One thing led to another, she had a couple drinks."
Brell says the accident didn't happen because she was drunk, but because the kids were unruly in the backseat.
Her family says the accident only happened because her grandkids were throwing yogurt in the car.
Her family says it's an isolated incident and a big mistake.
"She knows what she did," says her son. "She knows she messed up, everybody messes up here and there."
