(MEMPHIS) -- Just before 10:00 p.m. Monday, search and rescue crews located a drowning victim in Nonconnah Creek. Family members identify the victim as 19-year-old Angelo Hernandez.
Family members say Angelo and his brother Herman Hernandez were swimming and fishing in the creek, when all of the sudden Angelo went under water around 4:20 in the afternoon. "I tried to save him, but I couldn't," Herman said.
Fire department officials say first responders rescued Herman. He was in the water clinging to debris under the Riverport Road Bridge. Rescue workers pulled him to safety, then paramedics rushed him to the hospital.
Herman Hernandez returned to the scene shortly before sundown. He had just gotten out of the hospital and was still wrapped in sheets. He told us he came back to the bridge to show crews exactly where Angelo went under water.
Search and rescue workers used a police helicopter, search dogs and underwater cameras to try and locate Angelo Hernandez. Family members grieved and wept after they received news from police that crews located Angelo, but he did not survive.
We're told Angelo Hernandez moved to Memphis from Mexico five years ago. He leaves behind a large extended family.
