FAST FACTS:
  • Father son duo arrested Friday
  • Accused of trying to steal copper from MLGW trucks
  • Crime caught on tape

(Memphis 11/30/2009) Surveillance cameras capture a father-son team trying to steal copper wire from MLGW.

They might have pulled it off, if hadn't been for a group of angry employees who took matters into their own hands.

Sean Lambert Jr. and his 43-year-old dad are accused of breaking into several trucks, as well as a storage shed.

"They were trying to take off with 4600 dollars worth of copper," said Chris Stanley, spokesperson for MLGW.

However, a group of employees returning from a service call noticed a pair of bolt cutters on the ground and grew suspicious. When they spotted the suspects, the tape shows them chasing after them.

They cornered the duo until investigators arrived.

"It irks our employees when they don't have the materials they need to do the job they have to do," said Stanley.

He says what's also frustrating is Lambert senior is no stranger to MLGW.

"This is the father's 5th arrest for copper theft," said Stanley.

Back in 2006, court papers state he got into a footchase with security after he was caught prowling at the MLGW station on Tupelo after hours.

In 2005, at the same station, investigators say Lambert tried to hide between giant spools of copper. There was another footchase and Lambert fell and hurt his arm.

"Unfortunately copper theft is an ongoing issue we have," he said.

The cost of the crime, he says, eventually trickles down to you.

Stanley says they're working on other security measures. He couldn't divulge specifics he said because he doesn't want to tip off the crooks.

Both father and son are due back in court next month.
