FAST FACTS:
(Memphis 7/191/2010) As the race for the 9th Congressional District heats up, we're tracking who's giving and who's getting the biggest cash.
Incumbent Congressman Steve Cohen is leading the way in campaign contributions while former Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton just tallied his donations and sent them in to the Federal Elections Commission.
According to the FEC, Cohen has $930,084 of cash on hand and $866,225 in net contributions.
Herenton has just $19,336 of cash on hand and $31,650 in net contributions.
Trailing behind is Republican Charlotte Bergmann who has $11,969 of cash on hand and $27,218 from net contributions.
Herenton has already used Cohen's large campaign donations as a way to separate himself from the incumbent congressman.
Over the weekend, Herenton's slogan morphed into being about class and "common people.".
"'Just One' is about common people," Herenton told a crowd of supporters. "That's who I am. That's what the 9th Congressional District is... Congressman Cohen I think he got about $930,000 in the bank. Look over there at old Willie. That old boy had about $19,000 in the bank."
We asked Cohen about Herenton's tactic and the huge difference in donations. We're told his FEC filing "speaks for itself" and that he received support from "people of all socio-economic backgrounds."
Any candidate can agree, those dollars don't mean much unless their supporters vote.
