FAST FACTS:
"He says he wants to talk to me eye ball to eye ball and ask me some questions. I want him to do that eye ball to eye ball. Chin to chin, knee to knee, toe to toe, but he'll do it where we agreed to do it, July 11th on Channel 3 and if he doesn't he's a coward," said Cohen.
Congressman Steve Cohen says the former Memphis mayor, Willie Herenton, is a coward if he doesn't follow through with the debate. Cohen is fighting to keep his seat representing Memphis in the 9th Congressional District. Herenton is concerned the debate scheduled to air on channel 3 with WREG commentator Norm Brewer and the Commercial Appeal's Otis Sanford won't be fair because of things the two have said about him in the past.
Earlier this week Herenton told our reporter, "If you've followed my career, I've never dodged tough questions and you've covered me," said Herenton.
He added, "So, what Norm is saying now, you tell Norm Brewer that Willie Herenton said that is sheer bull***(expletive)!"
This weekend Cohen responded.
"We agreed to do it on Channel 3. We agreed to do it on July 11th. He's not going to dictate the terms of this debate to me or the Memphis public. He's not going demean Norman Brewer or Otis Sanford. We're going to have the debate there," said Cohen.
Cohen accuses Herenton of playing games. Cohen says he and his campaign are united and they're fighting for a united Memphis. They're talking issues but if those issues are going to be discussed in a debate with Herenton, it's going to have to be on the original terms.
Herenton has said he would be willing to debate the congressman on another television station with other panelists.
