Monday, he was one of nearly a dozen people who showed up at this Shelby County Child Support Office before it opened to find out how much he owed and when he can start paying so he can avoid getting his driver's license suspended.

"That is what this (letter) says. That they may suspend my license and I surely can't get a job if I don't have my license," said Mayo.

Shelby County has about 5,000 warrants issued to delinquent parents.

This week, they're being given the chance to settle things outside the courtroom.

Maximus, the private company administering the child support program on behalf of the state, is hoping at least 2,000 parents come in to discuss their cases.

"It's not to put anyone in jail. It's just, tell us what is going on with you so that we can work with you to get you back on track," said Frenchell Phipps with Maximus.

Ellery Cheatham lost his driver's license two years ago when he fell behind on child support payments. He owes around $20,000.

He came here to start making payments and get his license back.

"I hope and pray and will go in and bid a bit," said Cheatham.

Llloyd Moore owes around $7,000.

Both Moore and Cheatham were asked to make a good faith payment of $250 and agree to start making regular payments.

"They lowered my payments to an amount I can afford," said Cheatham.

"They are such a blessing to everyone that has gotten behind on child support and a word from the wise pay your child support," said Moore.

This is second time Shelby County has offered this program to parents.

Last month they collected $45,000 in back child support payments. This week they hope to double that amount.

If you want to take part in the program this week go to the Child Support Services Office at 3915 Mendenhall.

Office hours are 8am- 5pm Monday through Friday and 10am -1pm on Saturday.
