FAST FACTS:
(Memphis 11/14/2009) The people who live on Lynnbrier Avenue in East Memphis will never forget what happened Friday night November 13th. Police, safe streets task force and helicopters surrounded their street. They were kept in their houses then told to evacuate because one of their neighbors was a suspect in a bank robbery.
"Police were everywhere. There were at least 20 around my house and they were constantly knocking on the door, questioning me about him, about what I had been doing that day," said Caroline Cain.
"They were like do not leave your house. Turn off all the lights, like everything, it was really scary. I had no idea that he was even capable of doing that stuff," Cain added.
After a more than three hour standoff police arrested 52-year old Gregg Drew, the owner of the "World Famous Poplar Lounge" in Midtown. Investigators say drew stormed into the Trust One Bank on International Place in East Memphis with a black wig, fake moustache, and white mask and at gunpoint demanded money then fled to his house on Lynnbrier.
"He has a rather different lifestyle than other people who live in this neighborhood," said neighbor Judy Bookman.
Bookman, says drew has lived in her neighborhood for more than 10 years. He was always in and out and had a lot of visitors that would come and stay for a short period of time. Bookman says Drew, who is a memphis business owner, didn't strike her as someone who would rob a bank, "Probably not but if I had to pick somebody on the street who might I would probably narrow it down to him."
We went to poplar lounge. Those there were surprised by the news of his arrest and say if he did it they can't imagine why.
