FAST FACTS:
(Cordova, TN 1/18/2010) More than 100 people gathered at the Home Builder's Association in Cordova Monday night to learn about a new proposal involving annexation.
"I like to see people getting involved and having a say so in what goes on in their community," said Memphian David Jackson. He lives in an unincorporated part of Shelby County and was among the faces in the crowd.
"The laws that are in place right now give all the power to the government, not the people," said Joseph Fox.
Both he and his twin brother, Joshua, are leading the fight to change the laws. They believe citizens should have more of a say in whether they're annexed by any city.
"We want to send a message throughout Tennessee. It's time for people to start standing up to government," said Joshua Fox.
An attorney for the Shelby County Election Commission confirms it's approved the language of the twins' referendum.
However, they must collect 90,000 signatures by March 5, in order to get it on the August ballot.
"We have within thousands, not near what we need yet," said Joshua Fox.
It's an uphill battle they're willing to fight.
"The citizens should have the right to choose what they want to do, it's not to stop annexation, it's just to give citizens a final say in what they want to do."
Even if they gather enough signatures to put the proposal on the ballot, and the community supports it, it's likely this issue will end up in court.
