FAST FACTS:
(Memphis 3/24/2010) A caravan of 18-Wheelers rolled into Memphis Wednesday packed with food for thousands of families in need.
It was one of the biggest one day food giveaways ever in Memphis and it was organized locally by New Bethel Temple COGIC.
Around 200 volunteers showed up at the Liberty Bowl bright and early to help "Feed the Children" do what it does best, take care of those in need.
In this case, around 3,000 families in Memphis were helped.
"Because I care and we should care and that's the reason I'm down here," said Denise Tucker-Thomas.
People who showed up got to take home a box of food, enough to sustain a family of four for a week, a box of hygiene items and even a box of beauty products.
Joel Williams came here with vouchers for three family members and says it will help a lot.
"It's going to mean a great deal," said Williams.
"It's great and I have five in my family," said Pearlen Banis.
The giveaway is all part of Feed the Children's Americans Feeding Americans Caravan. This year it will visit more than two dozen cities across the country.
"Feed the Children" says in these rough economic times it wants to do whatever it can to help people get by.
The pastor of New Bethel Temple, who made sure "Feed The Children" made a stop in Memphis, says it's all about empowering people.
"New Bethel Temple's relationship with "Feed the Children" is really a mandate. It's not an option. It's a mandate for us to serve.
This is the second time in the just the past few months New Bethel Temple has teamed up with "Feed the Children."
The church is hoping it will encourage others in Memphis to reach out to their community.
