MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- Health officials in Memphis say a child has died from swine flu.
A statement from the Memphis and Shelby County Health Department on Wednesday said a 12-year-old who died at a local hospital has become the seventh person to die in Shelby County as the result of the virus.
Chief Medical Officer Dr. Helen Morrow said the boy's death is a reminder that the strain disproportionately affects young people.
On Tuesday, officials announced a DeSoto County, Miss., teenager who died last week was also a swine flu victim.
Health Department director Yvonne Madlock renewed a call for everyone in the community to get the vaccine, which she said is now in ample supply.
