By phone, Curry said board policy prevents him for discussing the investigation. But he said he wants the best for East High and he is proud of the school and the children. He says it's a great school.

Last week, a possible gang fight at East ended with students being maced by school security.

Earlier this year, a female student left campus during the middle of the school day with several males and says she was raped.

In another incident this year, students were caught on campus with a gun.

It's not in line with the East is Excellence message on the school's website and pushed by Curry in this web address.

"Our mantra this year is failure is not an option. We told that to all the teachers. Get in kids faces and tell them. Failure is not an option," Curry says on East High's website.

Superintendent Dr. Kriner Cash is not commenting on the suspension.

Last week he told us the fighting in city schools is being addressed.

"All of this is being addressed; there is more communication with Memphis City Schools and Memphis Police. That's a good thing. We have to get at the root cause, what's causing our young people to be so angry and to fight," Cash said last week.

Sources tell News Channel 3, Fred Curry's suspension may also be related to lap-top computers missing from the school.

But neither the school system nor Curry will confirm that.

Memphis City Schools says it is conducting an internal audit of East High.

That audit should be completed by the end of the week.
